At least 56 people died in bad weather in Brazil

Belo Horizonte – According to new data, 56 people have been killed in the floods in southeastern Brazil. At least 47 died in the state of Minas Gerais and a further 9 in the neighboring state of Espírito Santo, the news agency Agência Brasil reported on Monday (local time), citing the authorities. Other people were therefore still missing.

The emergency was proclaimed in 101 cities and municipalities.

In both states together, just under 30,000 people had to leave their homes and apartments because of the violent storms and rains last week. Civil defense warned of landslides.

The government of Minas Gerais has declared a state of emergency in 101 cities and towns, including the regional capital Belo Horizonte. According to the Brazilian weather service Inmet, the most intense rains in the past 110 years have been recorded in Belo Horizonte. Accordingly, 171.8 liters of rain per square meter fell on Friday within 24 hours. (AP)
